Nitinat Kiteboarding III: May 2006

Ron and myself just got back from a wild weekend in Nitinat. Check out the Nitinat kiteboarding pictures. Also joining us were my sister Karli, my brother-in-law Francis, and my neice Amalia. The weather was supposed to be bad but we went anyway because you can never accurately predict the weather at Nitinat. This weekend the sauna was built and we had 1.5 days of great wind for kiteboarding. The camp site was full, with only a few of the kiteboarding regulars, but we made new friends and had a great time.

The pictures are online: http://www.flickr.com/photos/extra_chrisb/sets/72157594223219923/

Nitinat Dale was ripping up the 25-30 knot wind on Sunday on a 16m and catching huge air. I grabbed a quick video of him kiteboarding, check it out below.

Perhaps I'm getting old (30), or perhaps it's because I come from a Surfing / Windsurfing background, but I remember a time when people didn't post what location they were sailing at for fear of exposing a 'secret spot'.

Do we really need to tell the whole world about Nitinat? Is the money made from Google Ads really worth exposing this magical place. In a world where everything is for sale, can we not keep Nitinat a secret for a few more years?

Go check out some surfing sites and you'll notice that surfers don't "kiss and tell". I like the idea of your site, and I'm glad you're not a "look at me Jet Skiing at Nitinat" (this is what has happened down in the Gorge by the way) kinda guy, but do you really want to rollup to Nitinat next year and have no parking, increased fees, and the possibility of some novice hurting himself and getting the whole joint shut down.

I think you should consider dropping the location names. Sure keep posting cool sailing shots, but let's not tell everyone in the whole world where it is. Not yet at least.

Just food for thought.

Happy Sailing.

J.

A Local Windsurfer who liked Nitinat when no only locals knew about it.

SBC Kiteboard Magazine just featured Nitinat in their current issue with a cover shot of a pro sliding a log... the secret is out. Also Naish and North have demo days there whereas my site, Kitebytes does not make a profit, I simply have adsense there to help pay for hosting. In regards to giving away the locals secret spot... I won't tell anybody about Nimpkish.

Are you serious? Just because some for-profit magazine sells the location of secret spots doesn't mean it's right? Furthermore, print material isn't as pernicious as web material.

And if the guy on the front of this magazine is your idea of a role model...

...then I guess I've got my work cut out for me.

You just wait til you start reading Blogs about how cool it is to buzz the Kyte boarders at Nitinat with Jet Skis, and I think you'll get my point.

And yes, I know I'm fighting a loosing battle, and I recognise that now I have to share the best windsurfing spots with a new trendy Kyte boarding crowd, but I hope you can see I have a point.

Let word of mouth have a chance!

"J",

You are a moron. Nitinat is far from a secret spot. What a joke. I was sailing there 15 years ago and it was still packed. It's also a crappy spot. There are many, many better places. Get out there and explore a bit.
